Zihao Zhang is an associate professor at the City College of New York Spitzer School of Architecture. His research focuses on cybernetics and the constructed environment — the entanglement of nature and technology, the human and nonhuman, ecosystems and intelligent machines. His book Cybernetics and the Constructed Environment (Routledge, 2024) interrogates the ramifications of cybernetics on contemporary culture and the built environment. He is also a co-founder of OSE (Office of Speculative Ecologies), a design practice working across climate adaptation, urban ecology, and social justice.
He holds a PhD in the Constructed Environment and an MLA from the University of Virginia, and a BEng in Landscape Architecture from Beijing Forestry University. He co-hosts Chubby Cat Happy Chat, a Mandarin podcast on design, philosophy, art, and technology.
